England vs Australia 2nd ODI Match Prediction & Betting Tips with Playing 11

Toss Prediction

Out of the 19 one-day internationals (excluding the three abandoned games and one tied game) played at the Sophia Gardens, 14 have been won by the team that has bowled first. Since the last three matches here have also been won by the chasing side, either skipper would want to field first after winning the toss.

England

Team News

England will probably stick with the same line-up for their Saturday's clash against the Aussies. They got the better of the visitors in the opening encounter of the series and so the selectors may not want to disturb the winning combination.

Key Players

Joe Root (50) and Eoin Morgan (69) smashed fifties in the first game. While the former is the leading run-getter in ODIs at this ground with 254 runs in 7 matches, the latter is third on the list with 224 runs in 9 matches. While these two are going to be the biggest hopes for England with the bat, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow who have been in good form are also key figures in this line-up. Liam Plunkett will be the big threat for Australia from this pace attack. The fast bowler took three wickets at the Oval and he also has seven wickets from three matches at this ground. Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali shared five wickets between them last time. Rashid has five wickets in three matches at this venue and the leg-spinner could cause problems for the Australian batsmen here.

Recent Form

The three-wicket win over Australia in the first ODI would have restored some confidence in the England camp after their shock defeat at the hands of Scotland in Edinburgh last Sunday. The hosts now have eight wins and four losses from the twelve one-day internationals they have played this year. Their bowlers played a massive role in the team's victory last time as they wrapped up the Australian innings at just 214 in 47 overs.

Australia

Team News

Australia skipper Tim Paine and coach Justin Langer have hinted that they might consider tweaking the balance of their side for the second ODI by bringing in an extra batsman. Alex Carey and D'Arcy Short are waiting in the reserves and one of them could get a game on Saturday. In this scenario, Michael Neser who made his international debut in the last game seems the most likely candidate to be dropped.

Key Players

Australia's top-order batting relies mainly on Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh. Finch was the team's best batsman in the previous ODI series against England at home and it will be difficult for the English bowlers to stop him once he spends some time in the middle. Marsh, with 1920 runs in 54 ODIs, has plenty of experience under his belt and the visitors will be hoping that he makes a strong contribution on Saturday. Glenn Maxwell hit 62 runs in the last game and Australia would have been relieved to see the all-rounder back amongst the runs. Their rookie pace attack was pretty impressive with Billy Stanlake and Andrew Tye picking up a couple of wickets each while conceding less than 4.50 runs per over. These two will be the team's go-to bowlers and they are expected to have a good game here with the pitch being conducive to seam bowling.

Recent Form

Australia faced their fifth loss in six one-day internationals this year when they were beaten by England in the last game at the Oval. Interestingly, they have played all their six matches this year against England and have been able to defeat them just once - in the fourth ODI at Adelaide during England's tour of Australia in January. The visitors suffered a batting collapse last time and they will need to make a significant improvement in this department.

Australia Predicted Playing 11

ENG vs AUS Head to Head

Despite losing their last match, Australia still hold a massive 81-57 lead over England in the 50-overs format.

The two countries have faced each other twice in one-day internationals at the Sophia Gardens with England emerging victorious on both the occasions.

The last time England and Australia met at this ground in an ODI was in 2013. The hosts, after knocking off the visitors for 227, chased down their target to win the match by three wickets.

England vs Australia 2nd ODI Betting Odds

England find themselves as the bookmakers' favorites to win the second one-day international, courtesy of their win against Australia in the opening game. The hosts are being offered at short odds of 1.53 on Betway, 1.50 on Bet365 and 1.58 on Betfair. The visitors were below par with the bat and will need to come up with a much better batting performance if they are to have any chance of a win against the hosts. While Betway is offering odds of 2.40 on Australia to win this match, Bet365 and Betfair have them up at 2.62 and 2.66 respectively.

England vs Australia 2nd ODI Prediction

Australia will be upset with their batting performance having scored just 214 in the last game, but they will be satisfied that they managed to give England a good scare despite having an inexperienced bowling attack. The hosts themselves will not be too pleased with their effort with the bat as they were reduced to 197-7 in 39 overs and the game looked to be slipping away from them at that time. They eventually got themselves over the line and had to be content with a narrow win what otherwise could have been a thrashing. Morgen's men will now face the Aussies at the Sophia Gardens - a venue where they have won just one of their past five ODIs. They have, however, beaten the visitors in both the matches they have played against them here. The hosts should feel a lot more confident after Wednesday's win and we predict them to take a 2-0 lead on Saturday.
